It’s time for our Fourth Annual Sagamore Racing Naming Contest and we need your help!

Fans will have the opportunity to name Sagamore-homebred colt by Lonhro out of You Hear Us Coming. Name submissions will be accepted via online form from March 2 through March 16, leading up to the First Round of the 2016 NCAA March Madness Men’s College Basketball tournament.

“Our team always enjoys the opportunity to connect and interact with our loyal fans and friends in the Thoroughbred industry,” said Hunter Rankin, Sagamore Racing president. “We encourage fans to have fun and use their imagination when selecting their submission for the contest and hope that this two year old is the next Sagamore star.”

Fans are encouraged to suggest a name in accordance with guidelines set forth by The Jockey Club, the principle governing body dedicated to the registry of Thoroughbred Stud book. On March 27, the Sagamore Racing team will reveal the “Elite 8” finalist bracket and voting will take place in bracket-style rounds via Sagamore Racing’s Facebook page.

The winning name will be announced on April 4 – in coordination with the March Madness Championship Game. The fan who submits the chosen name will receive a tour of Sagamore Farm, Sagamore Racing branded gear and a chance to attend the colt’s first local race.

Past naming contest horses have gone on to great success or are currently waiting in the wings for their chance to shine on the track. Tizgale (2013) went on to become a multi-Stakes placing horse including the two outings in The Very One Stakes on Preakness Day; Quoth the Raven (2014), born during the notorious Super Bowl XLVII “blackout” that the Baltimore Ravens went on the win, is currently in training in anticipation of his first start this Spring; and Native Crossing (2015), who recently finished first – breaking her maiden – at Aqueduct on February 26.

All Thoroughbreds, regardless of their actual date of birth, turn one year older on January 1st to keep age groups easily defined for race conditions. For a complete list of horse naming guidelines and to submit a name, please visit www.facebook.com/SagamoreRacing.
